Elizabetes Street is one of the most interesting streets in Riga, with a number of architectural monuments and lots of parks surrounding it - nearby is Kronvalda Park, Esplanade and Vermane Garden. The street was named in honor of Alexander I's wife, Empress Elizabeth Alexeyevna, and appeared on the map of Riga for the first time in 1812. Elizabetes Street, like many other streets, has changed its name several times throughout history. In 1940 it became Kirov Street, then Walter von Plettenberg Avenue, then Kirov again, and after many changes of name, in 1990 the street finally regained its historic name - Elizabetes Street.
The street begins at the so-called Quiet Center, which is especially loved by business people, diplomats and foreign guests. This neighborhood is characterized by peacefulness, without the hustle and bustle that usually overtakes the big cities, preserving all the advantages of the center - security, luxury apartments, respectable offices, shops, restaurants.
